This closed the final chapter of what was described as the most controversial refugee camp in Croatia, a stain on the reputations of not only the Croatian and Bosnian governments, but also of the international community, in particular the UN. Four days previously, the last 2,000 refugees had capitulated in the face of impending starvation, disenfranchisement and refoulement. On 1 August 1996, after 360 days, the last 141 refugees, including the 12 most serious wounded, travelled the four hours by road to Gašinci. ![]() Today is the twentieth anniversary of the forced closure of Kuplensko refugee camp. ![]()
