Made to stick heath brothers5/23/2023 Rather than sweating over an original presentation, you can follow their “stickiness” template or even emulate someone else’s idea that worked. You don’t have to be a great speaker to communicate your idea effectively-the authors show you what to do through numerous examples of messages that have succeeded and others that have bombed. Based on a wide-ranging examination of psychology research, popular culture, and news headlines, they identify six criteria for shaping your message so it resonates. Made to Stick by brothers Chip and Dan Heath explores what makes some messages “stick” in the public’s consciousness while others go unheard or unremembered and explains how to create an idea that sticks. In our overstimulated and distracted society, great ideas and important messages often fail to gain traction, while bad ideas and falsehoods, such as urban legends, go viral and seem to stick around forever. 1-Page Summary 1-Page Book Summary of Made to Stick

Getting Married by Theresa Alan5/22/2023 And it’s got to be better than working for a living… Maybe it’s just a concept created by marketing executives to sell perfume, candles, and weekend getaways. Asleep on the couch at ten o’clock just another Saturday night for me. Right after I make that cute guy from IT into my love slave…Īvery. But I’m going to get it together, I promise. I’ll admit that lately I’ve been a bit out of control. Waking up to discover you’re not alone in bed is ohmygod not good. Waking up with a searing hangover on a workday? Not good. Instead, I’m getting married, planning the wedding of my mom’s dreams, and searching for a dress that can cover my size 14 body without making me look like a toilet paper cover… I’d always imagined being the sort of adventurous girl who’d have an affair with a dark eyed stranger on the Eurail. Lewis who his endeared children with the Chronicles of Narnia. Lewis who wrote great Christian apologetic works of The Screwtape Letters and Mere Christianity. I have maintained a love of space through my reading of both scientifically based works like Stephen Hawkings’ A History of Time and Space to sci-fi works like Spin by Robert Charles Wilson.Ībout five years ago, my cousin introduced me to another sci-fi series related to space-one by Clives Staples Lewis! You heard me right, the same C.S. As a kid, I even made sure my planet decals were proportionately spaced from the sun as the real planets’ orbit around the sun! Space exploration and the study of astronomy always fascinated me and still grips my attention. Growing up I had those glow-in-the-dark planet decals attached to the ceiling of my bedroom. Alex haley novel5/22/2023 Some of the criticism results from whether Roots is fact or fiction and whether Alex Haley confused these two issues, a subject he addresses directly in the book. Over the years, both Roots and Alex Haley have attracted controversy, which comes with the territory for trailblazing, iconic books, particularly on the topic of race. Roots opened up the minds of Americans of all colors and faiths to one of the darkest and most painful parts of America’s past. It also won both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. The book sold over one million copies in the first year, and the miniseries was watched by an astonishing 130 million people. One of the most important books and television series ever to appear, Roots, galvanized the nation, and created an extraordinary political, racial, social and cultural dialogue that hadn’t been seen since the publication of Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Sappho the poems and fragments5/22/2023 Sappho also headed a thiasos, or an academy of unmarried women. She married a wealthy man in Mytilene, and they had a daughter names Cleis. She lived most of her life in the city of Mytilene, with the exception of her family’s brief exile in Sicily shortly after 600 B.C.E. Sappho was born on Lesbos to a noble family. The details of Sappho’s life have been obscured by legend and mythology, and the best source of information is the Suidas, a Greek lexicon compiled in the 10th century. She innovated the form of poetry through her first-person narration (instead of writing from the vantage point of the gods) and by refining the lyric meter. Called the Tenth Muse by Plato, Sappho was a prolific poet of ancient Greece. One of my faults, which caused frustration at school, but hey. I consider myself quite a well read and intelligent person on the whole, but I have a complete lack of interest in history. However, from my perspective, i found it to be an informative book that was not meant to fully 'inform', but to provide a taster or peek (if you will) of some of the major events in history. "I have had a read of the comments and reviews about this book, and tend to agree (more or less) with both sides of the coin which have been argued by his readers. The product of a generous and humane sensibility, this timeless account makes intelligible the full span of human history. This is a text dominated not by dates and facts but by the sweep of mankind’s experience across the centuries, a guide to humanity’s achievements and an acute witness to its frailties. In between emerges a colorful picture of wars and conquests, grand works of art, and the spread and limitations of science. In forty concise chapters, Gombrich tells the story of man from the Stone Age to the atomic bomb. It is now an international bestseller and available in almost thirty languages across the world. Amazingly, he completed the task in an intense six weeks, and Eine kurze Weltgeschichte für junge Leser was published in Vienna to immediate success. In 1935, with a doctorate in art history and no prospect of a job, twenty-six-year-old Ernst Gombrich was invited to attempt a history of the world for younger readers. Metaphors we live by book5/22/2023 The text offers mathematical and conceptual background, covering relevant concepts in linear algebra, probability theory and information theory, numerical computation, and machine learning. This book introduces a broad range of topics in deep learning. The hierarchy of concepts allows the computer to learn complicated concepts by building them out of simpler ones a graph of these hierarchies would be many layers deep. Because the computer gathers knowledge from experience, there is no need for a human computer operator to formally specify all the knowledge that the computer needs. Abstract: Deep learning is a form of machine learning that enables computers to learn from experience and understand the world in terms of a hierarchy of concepts. The Heretic by Lucas Bale5/22/2023 There's a lot of double-crossing going on and characters are trying to figure out what side they're on. I did have a little bit of trouble keeping track of who was on what side and who had betrayed who, but this was apparently the intention. The reader finally gets answers to some of the questions they may have had throughout the series, but many of these answers only spawn new questions. The continuation of Gant's story in particular was something I totally wasn't expecting to see, but thinking back to certain details in the previous books, it seems so obvious and inevitable now. Most of my predictions were dead wrong, though - I truly didn't have any idea what was coming. I confess to not being totally shocked by a couple of the aforementioned "vicious twists" because once I actually reached them, I realized everything had been flowing so naturally toward the revelations that I was more satisfied than surprised. Gant and Weaver and Natasha's storylines were all on a collision course. Characters who had previously been lone wolves - so to speak - were suddenly forced to form alliances and trust one another in order to face a common enemy, and I always love when that sort of thing happens. I was a little surprised to find that the book started out by introducing yet another character and story arc with Gant and his band of survivors, but after the way Defiance ended, I could tell this new arc was going to become relevant very quickly. |
